Hazards
Routes of Entry: Inhalation:YES Skin:YES Ingestion:YES
Reports of Carcinogenicity:NTP:YES IARC:YES OSHA:YES
Health Hazards Acute and Chronic:EYES/SKIN: AVOID CONTACT WITH
ELECTROLYTE FROM SPILLED OR BROKEN BATTERY. ELECTROLYTE IS SULFURIC
ACID - CORROSIVE. BATTERY UNIT IS CONSIDERED NON-SPILLABLE AND
CONTAINS ELECTROLYTE IN A NON- CONDUCTI VE POLYSTYRENE CASING WHICH
SHOULD NOT PRESENT UNDO HEALTH OR CONTACT HAZARDS UNLESS CASING
LEAKS OR IS BREACHED.
Explanation of Carcinogenicity:THIS BATTERY CONTAINS TRACE AMOUNTS OF
ARSENIC, A CARCINOGEN BY NTP, IARC, AND OSHA.
Effects of Overexposure:BURNING OR IRRITATION OF EYES/SKIN/ RESPIRATORY
TRACT. OVEREXPOSURE CAN ALSO CAUSE KIDNEY AND LIVER DAMAGE, LOSS OF
APPETITE, CONSTIPATION, DIARRHEA, FATIGUE, DIFFICULTY IN SLEEPING.
CHRONIC EXPOSURE TO SULFURIC ACID/FUMES CAN CAUSE EROSION OF TOOTH
ENAMEL, INFLAMMATION OF NOSE, THROAT AND BRONCHIAL TUBES.
Medical Cond Aggravated by Exposure:EXPOSURE TO MIST MAY AGGRAVATE LUNG
DAMAGE AND PULMONARY CONDITIONS.
First Aid
First Aid:EYE: IMMEDIATELY FLUSH WITH PLENTY OF WATER FOR 15 MINUTES.
GET MEDICAL ATTENTION. SKIN: WASH WITH SOAP AND WATER. INHALATION:
REMOVE TO FRESH AIR.(IF EXPOSURE IS TO LEAD, GARGLE, WASH NOSE AND
LIPS; CONSULT PHYSICIAN) INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING.(ACID)
GIVE MILK TO DRINK. SEEK MEDICAL HELP AT ONCE. IF INGESTION IS OF
LEAD ONLY, INDUCE VOMITING - CONSULT PHYSICIAN.
Fire Fighting
Lower Limits:4.1 HYDROGEN
Upper Limits:74 HYDROGEN
Extinguishing Media:USE CARBON DIOXIDE, FOAM, OR DRY CHEMICAL AS
APPROPRIATE FOR SURROUNDINGS
Fire Fighting Procedures:WEAR FIRE FIGHTING PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND A
FULL FACED SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS. EVACUATE AREA. COOL
FIRE EXPOSED CONTAINERS WITH WATER SPRAY.
Unusual Fire/Explosion Hazard:COMBUSTION OR HEAT OF FIRE MAY PRODUCE
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS AND VAPORS.
Accidental Release
Spill Release Procedures:CONTAIN SPILL USING NON-COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS
LIKE VERMICULITE, DRY SAND, AND EARTH.
Neutralizing Agent:SODIUM BICARBONATE, SODA ASH OR LIME.
Handling
Handling and Storage Precautions:STORE IN A COOL, DRY, AREA. PROTECT
BATTERY FROM PHYSICAL DAMAGE. DO NOT INCINERATE.
Other Precautions:AVOID CONTACT WITH BATTERY ELEMENTS (LEAD OR ACID
ELECTROLYTE). WASH THOROUGHLY AFTER HANDLING.
Exposure Controls
Respiratory Protection:IF VENTILATION DOES NOT MAINTAIN INHALATION
EXPOSURES BELOW PEL (TLV), USE NIOSH/MSHA APPROVED RESPIRATOR AS
PER CURRENT 29 CFR 1910.134, INSTRUCTIONS/WARNINGS AND
NIOSH-RESPIRATOR SELECTION.
Ventilation:MECHANICAL (GENERAL) VENTILATION IS USUALLY ADEQUATE.
Protective Gloves:ACID RESISTANT GLOVES.
Eye Protection:SAFETY GLASSES/CHEMICAL SPLASH GOGGLES
Other Protective Equipment:ACID RESISTANT CLOTHING AND BOOTS. EYE WASH
AND SAFETY SHOWER.
Work Hygienic Practices:WASH THOROUGHLY AFTER HANDLING.
Supplemental Safety and Health
AVOID CONTACT. DO NOT SMOKE AROUND BATTERIES - HYDROGEN GAS IS
PRODUCED.
